Titanium alloys will produce different colors during the anodizing process, mainly because of the different thickness of the oxide film. Anodic oxidation is an electrochemical method to form an oxide film on the surface of titanium alloy, the thickness of this film will affect the interference of light.

Specifically, light is reflected between the oxide film and air and between the oxide film and the titanium alloy substrate. When the thickness of the film reaches a certain value, the phase difference of the reflected light will cause the light of some wavelengths to be enhanced, while the light of other wavelengths is weakened, resulting in different color effects. This process is similar to the phenomenon of color on a soap bubble or oil film.

Different oxide film thicknesses correspond to different colors, for example, a thin film may appear blue, while a thicker film may appear yellow or purple. This color change not only has an aesthetic effect, but also improves the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of titanium alloys.
